As January rolls in, so does veganuary. Some love it, some don’t get it and some still haven’t heard of it.
What is Veganuary?
Veganuary is a global movement and nonprofit campaign that encourages people to try a vegan diet for the month of January. Founded in 2014, it aims to promote the benefits of veganism for animals, the environment and human health.
Veganuary in Decline?
Since launching in 2014, the number of people partaking in veganuary has soared, with UK sales of meat-free foods shooting up 40% between 2014-19 (Mintel, 2020). Within this time, January has also seen a significant rise in demand for vegan pastries, vegan cakes and other plant-based goods.
However, the squeeze on household budgets and price rises led to cutbacks on dairy alternatives in 2023, and many manufacturers reduced their vegan ranges. The declines eased in 2024, and Market Research Agency Mintel suggested that 2025 will see an increase in demand for dairy-free products (Mintel, 2024).
