A crodough, also known as a Cronut, combines the best aspects of a croissant and a doughnut.

They share the same shape as a doughnut, but instead of their typical doughy texture, they have a crispy exterior and are soft and airy on the inside. Although invented in a bakery in New York, it is their French style that makes them a more upscale gourmet alternative to the classic doughnut.

The French-inspired sweet treat was invented by French pastry chef Dominique Ansel in 2013. The Cronut quickly became a viral food trend that stole the hearts of doughnuts and croissant lovers alike. Following Cronut’s rapid rise to fame, the term Cronut was quickly trademarked. This is why there are now many variations using names such as crodough, doughtssant, crullant, dosant – and that’s just to name a few!

Crodoughs are made by laminating croissant dough with layers of butter to give them the same soft, light layers that can be found in croissants. The layered dough is then shaped into a traditional doughnut shape before being deep-fried until crispy and golden brown. Unlike the soft and pillowy texture of a classic doughnut, this technique gives the doughnut croissant hybrid a flaky, buttery texture on the inside and a crispy sugary exterior.

Like a doughnut, a crodough is typically covered in icing or glaze, or filled with sweet or savoury fillings. The UK is torn over the best doughnut filling, the age-old doughnut debate divides friends, families and co-workers. Research has found that only a small proportion (20%) of Britons favour the ring doughnut, with the majority (52%) preferring a filled doughnut. But what filling would be their favourite?

Overall, a classic jam doughnut remains Britain’s favourite doughnut filling, with one in six Britons choosing either raspberry or strawberry jam as their filling of choice.
