Banoffee Pie; a classic English dessert...promise

We can't help it, we're bananas for Banoffee Pie. Surprisingly this classic English dessert often courts controversy. Is it an American vs English dessert? Should it have a biscuit or a pastry base? Well no need to worry as we can answer these points and even deliver one straight to your door.

Although masquerading as an archetypal American dish, with its wonderful whipped cream topping and pie base, this delicious creation was actually invented in England in the 1970's. The chef of the Hungry Monk pub in Sussex was inspired by an American dessert, Blum's Coffee Toffee pie, to arrive at something that would satisfy any sweet tooth.

The main ingredients are condensed sweetened milk, boiled to make toffee, fresh cream, and bananas, combined on a biscuit base. The orginal recipe did in fact use shortcrust pastry, but over time digestive biscuits have snuck in to claim the no1. base position. We think they make for a tastier dessert and we're sure you'll agree.
